… is the Chief Medical Officer of USS Hiroshima.

Adrianna Darney
Adrianna Darney

Introduction

A human medic, Adrianna Darney once served as the Hiroshima’s Chief Medical Officer before leaving to pursue her career elsewhere. What happened to her afterwards, and the circumstances of what brought her back to the Hiroshima, remain a mystery…

Character History

Adrianna Darney grew up in the industrial sprawl of the Utopia Planitia Shipyards on Mars, where the hum of plasma welders and the sight of half-built starships were as common as sunsets. Her father, Walter Darney, was a shipbuilder. He was methodical, efficient, and quietly proud of the work that left his hands. He wanted Adrianna to dream bigger than he ever had, and for a time, she did. Like any kid raised among starships, she wanted to be a captain or engineer. Walter encouraged those ambitions, perhaps picturing his daughter at the helm of a ship that might one day surpass any he’d built.

Then Adrianna’s mother died. It happened quickly; an unexplained illness, likely contracted from one of the exploratory vessels that passed through the yards for retrofitting. Adrianna was ten, and the loss cut deeper than she could express. Instead of captaining ships, she became obsessed with the question of why. Why had no one seen the illness coming? Why couldn’t it be stopped? That grief hardened into a fierce curiosity that eventually defined her: she searched to understand death, disease, and the fragile systems that ran our bodies.

Adrianna spent her adolescence with a medical text in one hand and a hundred questions in her head. She lingered at the shipyards, pestering every medic who crossed her path, following them like a shadow. It didn’t take long for her to be adopted by the passing medical crews as a sort of mascot, this whip-smart, stubborn kid who wouldn’t stop asking about everything from wound-sealing to alien blood chemistry. Some of them even let her watch or assist with minor procedures, indulging her determination to learn.

When Adrianna turned 17, she enrolled in Starfleet Academy with one goal: medicine and an unrelenting drive to know how to be able to save lives. She excelled in xenobiology and forensic pathology, fields that demanded precision, curiosity, and a willingness to look closely at uncomfortable truths.

Adrianna eventually found herself as Chief Medical Officer aboard the Hiroshima, a role she filled with quiet competence. She poured herself into the job, sometimes too much.

Gavin McWest entered her life by sheer circumstance, but he’s become the closest thing to family she has left. Their bond was forged under the worst possible conditions: abducted by the Foundation, trapped in stasis for a decade, and left to wake in a galaxy that had moved on without them. Where Adrianna is composed and measured, Gavin is fire, reckless humor, stubbornness, and wounds he won’t admit to. He’s the younger brother she never asked for but refuses to let go of.  She sees the weight he carries because she feels her own, and neither of them is willing to let the other sink.

Adrianna doesn’t waste time with idle chatter or pointless optimism. She’s reserved and sometimes comes off as distant, but when she speaks, it’s with purpose. She is deeply loyal to the people she calls her own. If she has to stand alone to keep them safe, she will.

Adrianna is content to spend hours alone with her work rather than risk the awkwardness of small talk. Though sharp-witted and deeply intelligent, she prefers to avoid social situations if she is able. It’s not arrogance, though it’s often mistaken for it. The truth is, she’s simply more comfortable with the silence of a lab or the hum of Sickbay than with navigating people’s expectations. She has a habit of tuning others out when she’s focused, unintentionally coming across as aloof.  She has little patience for carelessness or frivolity, but those who earn her trust discover someone fiercely loyal and quietly compassionate.

Personality

Shy to a fault, she is quite happy to be a loner. Though gifted intellectually, she is very insecure in social situations, and prefers to avoid them entirely. Oftentimes she gets so absorbed in her work and thoughts that she tends to unintentionally tune others out. She’s sometimes seen as being arrogant and aloof, but in reality, she’s nothing of the sort to those few who bother to break down her barriers, not an easy task. She is extremely dedicated to her work, and really does need other hobbies.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Adrianna is very competitive when it comes to her work. This can usually be both a strength and a weakness, depending on the situation. She has a passionate love for xenobiology, and has excelled both academically and professionally in that field. Along the way, she has also developed a strong interest in forensic pathology. She has a strong perfectionistic streak but can never quite live up to her own standards. Though she expects perfection from her subordinates as well and has little patience for frivolity.

Appearance

Adrianna stands at 5′7″, with sharp blue eyes that miss nothing and chestnut-brown hair, usually tied back in a practical style when she’s on duty.

While attractive, Adrianna is of average height and weight. She normally wears her long straight hair pulled back from her face in an unflattering low ponytail. She does not stand out in a crowd. She is usually watching her feet, or has her nose in a PADD when she walks. She rarely makes direct eye contact with others.
